Deloris A. Wellman

Red Cloud, Nebraska

Deloris A. Wellman, age 91, of York, Nebraska died Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Downs Nursing Center in Downs, Kansas.

Graveside services were held Monday, 2:00 p.m., December 1, 2008 at the Greenwood Cemetery in York, Nebraska with the Rev. Jeff Wulf officiating.

The daughter of Nellie Blanche (Newman) and Hubert Allen Lounsburry, she was born October 6, 1917 at York. She was a graduate of the York High School, and then worked for the York Credit Bureau for five years. She later became the Deputy Clerk of the District Court and then worked for NPPD for 26 years. She was best known for her efficiency, organization and memory, as well as her good nature and big smile.

Deloris loved many organizations and donated numerous hours to improving the lives of others. She was a member of the York Business and Professional Women's Club for thirty-one years. She maintained her active membership in the American Legion Auxiliary since 1965. Deloris joined the VFW Auxiliary in 1955, and remained active all her life in their endeavors. She also belonged to the Does Drove #7 of York for eighteen years.

Deloris was active in the First Christian Church of York from an early age, accepting Christ through baptism at the age of 11. She was the primary pianist for 28 years and sang in the choir. She taught Sunday school for 28 years and later in life often spoke of the youngsters in her classes and the milestones they had accomplished. She was an active member of the Christian Youth Endeavor group and later the Christian Women's Fellowship.

Deloris attended a First Christian Church youth skating party in 1936 at Waco, and it was there that she met Clarence R. Wellman. They were married April 6, 1941. She quickly became an asset to the Wellman Roller Rink with her love of the public and friendly nature. They spent the first years of their married life on skates. The building the rink was housed in was the former Stein's Beach, where such notable bands as Lawrence Welk played. Some of her fondest memories were when people would bring in harvest from their garden to pay for their skating. Clarence and Deloris celebrated 67 years of marriage. This union was blessed with a son, Dean E. Wellman.

Deloris was a devoted housewife and mother. She loved her son so much that she took trips with him and later his wife, Linda to the Ozarks and Colorado. Deloris delighted in the big gatherings at Christmas and Thanksgiving, always happy to see family and friends.

She enjoyed gardening and sharing her harvest of giant tomatoes and abundance of zucchini. Deloris loved to cook, especially desserts and it was well known that she never met a chocolate that she didn't like. One area of her expertise was fixing wild game and roasts that would melt in your mouth. She worked magic with her needlecrafts, knitting hats for charities, and afghans with her own designs. Her favorite cat was always by her side helping sort the yarn.

Deloris is survived by her husband, Clarence of York and son, Dean and wife Linda of Lebanon, Kansas. Also a brother, Virgil and wife Yvonne Lounsburry of Oceanside, California. Her parents and a brother, Lavern, preceded her in death.
