Doris Hoard

–

Superior, Nebraska

Doris Jean Dustan Hoard, the third child of Arthur Raymond Dunstan and H. Lucille Morris Dunstan. She was born on January 11, 1936 on a farm near the Jewell County/Republic County Line. Located 5 miles south and two miles west of Courtland.

Doris attended all 12 years of school in Formoso, Kansas where she was active in softball, tennis, cheerleading, and music. She played piano for Sunday school in 5th and 6th grade and played for her church in high school.

Doris was rarely idle. As a teen, she cleaned and ironed for various families in the community, babysat, cleaned the Lodge Hall, worked in Fetrow's Grocery store, and helped with the family business. During her high school years she worked at the A.S.C.S office in Mankato. After high school, she was employed at Lester's Sweet Shop in Concordia and the Elliot Coffee Shop in Belleville.

She was married to Norman Dean Hoard on May 15, 1954 by Rev. Abe Edigar in the Formoso Community Church Parsonage. To this union three sons were born; Kevan D., Kris G., and Scott A.

Doris and Norman bought the Standard Oil filling station from Sam Burger in August of 1954. Doris helped run this business alongside her husband for 50 years. Hoard Oil is still a family operated business 59 years later. She also helped Norman coach and keep score for PeeWee and Cookie baseball for 20 years.

Doris joined the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, and enjoyed playing the piano for church and special events. Later, she transferred her membership to the Courtland Covenant Church.

She had many hobbies and talents including glass etching, reverse painting on glass, wood carving, painting in both acrylics and oil. Crocheting and quilting were two of her favorite ways to spend her time. Doris was known far and wide for her cooking skills. She was a lover of plants and flowers and spent much of her time growing and giving great care to them. Yet, she always had time for a cup of coffee with old friends and had no trouble making new ones. She could be found playing cards and games with her children and grandchildren on any given day. Doris had the patience to instill her sewing and cooking talents in her granddaughters.

After Doris retired from book keeping at Hoard Oil, she became an in-home care giver in her community. Once a month she found the time to play the piano at local rest homes, which she found most rewarding.

Doris felt her greatest achievement in life was her strong belief in God. She was also proud of the family business she and Norman built together, her three sons, being a care giver, and the many hours she spent sharing music.

The last thought she wanted to leave with her church family was "Surmount all obstacles in life, endure them by leaning on Jesus, He will sustain you."

Doris peacefully passed from her Earthly existence in her home, Thursday January 31, 2013 at 7:14 p.m. She was surrounded by her husband, three sons, her brother Dan, and her granddaughter Melanie. Proceeding in death are her parents Arthur and Lucille Dunstan, infant brother Bobby Rae, and brother Richard Dunstan.

She is survived by her husband Norman, her three sons; Kevan and wife Lori of Minneapolis, KS, Kris and wife Susan of Concordia, KS, and Scott of Courtland, a brother Dan and wife Donna of Pittsburg, KS, and sister Dixie Scott of Tyler, TX. Five grandchildren; Bryan of Wichita, Melanie of Salina, Emily and Madeline of Concordia, and Noah of Courtland. Five step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 5th from the Covenant Church in Courtland, KS. Pastor Chuck Peters and Pastor Kathy Aeillo will officiate.
