Dorothy M. Riggins

Dorothy May Riggins, the daughter of Lula (Nichols) and Joseph Nichols, was born May 23, 1926 at Franklin, Nebraska. She departed this life on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Franklin, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 15 days.

Dorothy spent her childhood years in Franklin County and graduated from the Franklin High School with the class of 1944. She worked for as a secretary with the Franklin schools. On March 1, 1946 she was married to Lester Marvin Greening at Smith Center, Kansas. A son, Wayne, was born to this union while they were living in Yakima, Washington. They returned to Franklin County, making their home at Bloomington, where her husband, Lester, preceded her in death on June 23, 1948.

On December 26, 1950, Dorothy was united in marriage with Wayne Keith Riggins at Smith Center, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters, Connie and Cindy. They made their home at Riverton, where Dorothy worked for many years as the Riverton City Clerk. She also helped working at her mother-in-law, Vi Riggins' Cafe for many years.

In her leisure time Dorothy enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and gardening. Her greatest love and enthusiasm was for her family and she especially cherished the time they spent together. While in school in 1940, Dorothy won the State Spelling Bee Contest.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lester Greening and Wayne Riggins on November 21, 1992; an infant daughter, Barbara Allene on June 23, 1948; daughter, Cindy Lane; a sister, Velma June Bronson; and three brothers, Richard, Carl and Clarence "Nick" Nichols.

Left to treasure her memory are her daughter, Connie Riggins of Riverton, Nebraska; a son, Wayne Greening of Riverton; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., May 14, 2011 at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton, Nebraska with the Rev. Marshall Faulkenberry officiating.
