Red Cloud, Nebraska
Gary A. Lewis was born June 29, 1948 to Daisy (Moore) and Elmer Lewis at Red Cloud, Nebraska, joining sister, Maxine and brothers, Paul, Leroy and Robert in the rural Jewell county Kansas community. The family moved to a Nebraska farm in the Walnut Creek area where he attended country school and often rode his horse, "Princess", to school. While growing up on the farm he developed his lifelong love of all types of outdoor hunting and fishing. He often got in trouble with Dad for going fishing when he thought Gary was too young to go off on his own. He attended high school in Red Cloud and joined the Kansas National Guard in 1967, serving thru 1973.
In 1968, Gary was joined in marriage with Bonnie Figgins at Red Cloud. To this union they were blessed with a son, Barry, and daughter, Amy. Together the family enjoyed school sporting events, plays and camping with friends and family.
Gary was an avid hunter and shared that love with many friends and family. He was employed at Dutton Lainson in Hastings for many years, Peterson Oil in Red Cloud and was a co-founder of Figgins & Lewis Construction Company. 2005 fulfilled a long time dream of moving to Arkansas. While living in the south he worked at Cloyes Gear Company at Subiaco and enjoyed time with special friends. Gary made friends everywhere he went and held them close to his heart. He accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized at Crestview Baptist Church in 2011. 2013 brought he and Bonnie back to Nebraska to enjoy their seven grandchildren, the birth of their first great grandchild, as well as many plays, track meets and cherished time together.
Gary is survived by his wife, Bonnie; son, Barry and wife Kris; grandchildren Elizabeth, Elijah, Ethan, Abby and Kaleb of Guide Rock, Nebraska; daughter, Amy and husband Mike Koler and grandsons Joshua and Nick; great granddaughter, Peyton and Taylor Fuhr. Also surviving are brothers, Paul of Lincoln, Nebraska; Leroy and Violet Lewis of Callaway, Nebraska; Robert and Dora Lewis of Aiken, South Carolina, and brother-in-law, Eldon Smith of Denver, Colorado; many nieces, nephews and "chosen family" who graced their home over the years.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Maxine.
Memorial services were held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., May 14, 2016 at the Revival Tabernacle Church in Red Cloud with Pastor Darrell Sutton officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.
