Glen Edward Hopkins, the son of George and Bessie (Schmidt) Hopkins, was born April 13, 1929, at Riverton, Nebraska. He departed this life on September 13, 2024, at the CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska at the age of 95.
Glen received his formal education graduating from the Riverton High School and then earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Kearney State Kearney. A veteran of the United States Army and the Korean Conflict, Glen enlisted on January 25, 1951, and served his country stationed in Germany until his discharge on January 15, 1953. Glen was a school administrator in a number of communities in the south central Nebraska area and retired from public education in 1967. Glen was married to Patricia Lovelace and this union was blessed with two sons, Mike and John. This marriage later ended in divorce.
In 1967, Glen moved to California and was employed by the state as a data analyst until his retirement in 1992, when he returned to his acreage south of Riverton. On July 4, 1979, Glen and Donna Sleight were united in marriage at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. They made their home together until the marriage dissolved, but they remained close in the following years.
Glen dedicated his life to serving others and retirement certainly did not change that mindset. In his leisure time he pursued a number of activities and interest including hunting, fishing, following Husker football and his was an avid reader of the Wall Street Journal and various stock market reports. With great passion Glen loved caring for his home along the Republican River and Thompson Creek and especially enjoyed watching the various wildlife pass through the property. He was a fiercely independent person with an exceptionally kind heart and caring nature, who always thought of others before himself.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Bessie and George Hopkins, a brother, Dale Hopkins, and special friend, Clarice Lipp.
Left to treasure his memory are his sons, Mike Hopkins and wife, Sandra Abel-Hopkins of Hastings, Nebraska, and John Hopkins of El Dorado Hills, California; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Kerry Hopkins of Lincoln, Nebraska; Donna Hopkins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, 10:30 am, September 17, 2024, at the Congregational Church in Riverton with Pastor Jay Towell officiating. Interment with military honors was at the Riverton Cemetery.
